Mormon Battalion Commemoration...

On Saturday I took the girls to the Mormon Battalion Commemoration in Old Town. It was the 164th anniversary of battalions arrival into San Diego. The battalion was called by President Polk to march from Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas to San Diego, Ca during the Mexican-American war. It was one of the longest infantry marches in the history of the US Arm. They turned the park into what life would have been like back in 1847 for the members of the battalion and their families. I decided to take the girls to the celebration because it had been a couple of years since we had gone. The older two girls were really interested in all of it, but Brooklyn was very cranky. I think she was still a bit tired from her big day the day before at the Disney on Ice show. It was fun though.

The day started with a parade.

Then we made our way thru some of the booths. Our first stop was the gold panning booth.

Then it was off to do a little laundry.

My girls already have a lot of experience at the next booth we went to since this a regular thing we do in our family. They made biscuits on a stick. (we fill them full of fruit and call them woofums, but they just called them biscuits on a stick and gave you a little butter)

Then we went over to let the girls make the kind of dolls that the kids back in the 1840's played with.

The final booth we went to was the quilting booth. I think this was Kaylee's favorite part. Each girl got a square with a picture on it that they were able to sew around. It took forever, but they had fun with it.

After they were done quilting it was time for us to leave because Brooklyn was just too fussy and needed a nap. We stopped at one of the covered wagons on our way out for a quick picture. On the way to the car Kaylee asked if we could please go to all the booths next year. I love that she likes learning about our history so much.
